Join my friend and colleague, Eleni Dapolo,
for a two-day (mostly) walking tour
of Athens, Wednesday, April 29, and Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Eleni is a licensed archaeological guide, a lifelong resident of Athens,
and one of the best in the city. She has been hosting tours of Athens
for our Wild Crete guests for many years.
Monday, April 27, 2026 – Depart USA for Athens
Tuesday, April 28, 2026 – Arrive in Athens. Check in at the hotel.
Wednesday, April 29, 2026 – The Acropolis, Parthenon
and the Acropolis Museum
The tour begins on Wednesday morning at the Astor Hotel.
Eleni will meet the group in the lobby at 7:15,
from here, travel to the Acropolis by taxi.
As you tour the site, Eleni shares the rich history of Greece’s
most famous archaeological site.
(Yes, that’s an early start time, but this means you'll avoid the crowds.)
From there, cross the street to the Acropolis Museum.
The museum's collection includes displays on the private lives
of ancient Athenians and original decorative works
from the Acropolis, mostly from the Parthenon.
The museum is impressive not only for the archaeological treasures
it contains but also for its modern architectural design.
The museum's walls are all glass, so while you view the exhibits,
you're surrounded by sweeping views of the Acropolis,
the Parthenon, and the entire city of Athens.
It is one of the most innovative museums in the world!
After leaving the museum, the group will
stop at a nearby cafe for lunch.
From there, you can explore the neighborhood
on your own or return to the Astor Hotel. Free evening.
Thursday, April 30, 2026 - The Ancient Agora and the National Archaeological Museum
Meet Eleni in the hotel lobby at 10:00 am, and walk
to Monastiraki Square, the site of ancient Athens' Agora.
Here you’ll learn more about this important center of
Greek government and society since the 6th century BCE.
After a souvlaki lunch, Greece’s most popular street food,
take a taxi to the National Archaeological Museum.
Often considered one of the best museums worldwide,
it has a large collection of Greek artifacts from prehistory to late antiquity.
Eleni will guide you through the many exhibits,
explaining how they relate to the history of the sites you've visited.
After leaving the Museum in the late afternoon,
take a taxi back to the Astor Hotel.
Free evening.
Friday, May 1, 2026 – Free day ito explore Athens!
Sunday, May 2, 2026 – Fly to Heraklion, Crete on the 10:00 am flight
