Wild Crete Travel
A Journey Through Herbs, Food & Tradition
May 8–17, 2027 | Nine Days on the Greek Island of Crete
Our Journey on Crete
Come discover Crete through the flavors, fragrances, and traditions that make this Mediterranean island so extraordinary. Join herbalist Patricia Kyritsi Howell for an intimate journey into the island's living food culture, where aromatic herbs grow along mountain paths, wild greens find their way into beloved family recipes, and hospitality is an art practiced every day.
We'll spend time with local cooks, farmers, herbalists, and other island residents who will share their knowledge, stories, and traditions with us. We'll forage for spring greens, learn to prepare classic Cretan dishes, wander through herb-scented landscapes, explore colorful markets, and linger over long meals at family-run tavernas.
Our journey takes us from a traditional village and working farm in western Crete to the bustling streets and archaeological treasures of Heraklion. Along the way, we'll explore the deep connections between plants, food, healing, history, and daily life.
This is travel at a human pace.Instead of racing between tourist attractions, we'll make room for spontaneous discoveries, conversations with locals, leisurely lunches, and quiet moments to soak in the beauty around us. You'll have time to wander village lanes, browse little shops, sip Greek coffee in a sunny café, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being somewhere new and different.
Come with your curiosity, your appetite, and your love of plants. We'll take care of the rest.

We'll begin with a welcoming lunch at the farm, a chance to meet one another and start getting acquainted with Crete's flavors. After settling into our rooms, we'll gather for an orientation to the week ahead.
In the late afternoon, we'll take an easy walk to meet the spring wildflowers and aromatic plants growing around the farm and village. We'll finish the day with dinner in Vamos, beginning our exploration of Cretan food and hospitality at a neighborhood taverna.
Today’s theme: Arrive, connect, and begin to experience the rhythms of village life.

Wild Greens & the Cretan Kitchen
Wild greens are among the most treasured ingredients in traditional Cretan cooking. Gathered from fields, hillsides, and garden edges, they appear in pies, salads, and simple dishes that celebrate the changing seasons.
Today, we'll join a hands-on cooking class at the farm. First, we'll head out to gather spring greens, learning to recognize the plants and appreciate their place in local food traditions. Then we'll return to the kitchen to prepare several traditional Cretan dishes, discovering the techniques, ingredients, and kitchen wisdom passed down through generations.
Our reward will be a celebratory feast, sharing the meal we've prepared together.
The evening is yours to enjoy. Wander through Vamos, explore the surrounding countryside, or simply relax at the farm and savor the pleasures of a day spent gathering, cooking, and eating together.

Aromatic Herbs & a Farm-to-Table Experience
Crete's aromatic plants are woven into nearly every aspect of traditional life, from seasoning everyday meals to preparing home remedies. Today, we'll visit a nearby permaculture herb farm to explore these connections firsthand.
On a guided walk, we'll meet some of Crete's key culinary and medicinal herbs, learn how they grow, how locals use them, and what makes the island's aromatic flora distinctive. We'll discover how climate, landscape, and traditional agricultural practices shape the plants that give Cretan food and folk healing their characteristic flavors and healing powers.
After our walk, we'll enjoy a leisurely lunch at the herb farm, with time to talk, ask questions, and learn more about the people and practices behind the food on our plates.
The rest of the evening is free. Perhaps you'll find a favorite village café or return to a dish you particularly enjoyed the night before.
